Another Week, Another Protest

On Wednesday, May 14, a protest is planned in Richland, WA to demonstrate against cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, NBCRight Now reports. The group organizing the event is Indivisible Tri-Cities.

Participants are being asked to show up and bring signs to let Rep. Dan Newhouse ( R ) know that they are against any cuts to these programs.

“Our families can’t afford to fund more tax breaks for the wealthy while their healthcare and food security hang in the balance,” Loren Malone, spokesperson for Indivisible Tri-Cities told NBC.

A few weeks ago, on May 1, the same organization, Indivisible Tri-Cities, planned a May Day protest, the Tri-City Herald reported. Hundreds of activists obstructed George Washington Way as commuters drove down the street on their way to work.

Ironically, the May Day protest was in support of workers and workers’ rights. Apparently, the right to get to work through an unobstructed route is not one they are concerned about.

On April 19, a group of protesters demonstrated against the Trump administration along George Washington Way and at John Dam Plaza, KEPR reported. Again, this event was organized by Indivisible Tri-Cities.

“We’re just a group of people, like minded, that want to fight together, and I think that’s made a big difference because right now the spectrum is all over,” Indivisible Tri-Cities founder, Loren Malone, told KEPR.

On February 1st, George Washington Way was the site of another protest, NBCRight Now reported. This one was a demonstration against ICE and in support of illegal immigration. A second protest was held on February 2 at a location in Pasco.

To many residents protests have become a regular occurrence. The group behind them plans events with different issues as the headline, but with one overall theme.

Indivisible is a national organization whose mission is to resist the Trump agenda.

“Brought together by a practical guide to resist the Trump agenda, Indivisible is a movement of thousands of group leaders and more than a million members taking regular, iterative, and increasingly complex actions to resist the GOPs agenda, elect local champions, and fight for progressive policies,” their website states.

The website goes on to air further, and familiar, grievances. The group is fighting against “white nationalists,” the “ultra-rich,” and those who have been, “actively working to further undermine democracy and cement their hold on power permanently.”

Claiming that Republicans have had total control of the government for decades, the group aims to fight against the GOP to build, “an inclusive democracy.”

Co-founders of the national organization are married couple, Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin. The couple states on their website that “our democracy was rigged from the start in favor of the white and wealthy.”

Greenberg and Levin, who appear to be white, are college graduates with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Levin completed his Master’s in Public Affairs from Princeton University.
